Hi, I’m Mia. Nice to Meet You!

January 20, 2010

Hi there, this is Mia!

My birthday is in January. I’m seven years old right now, but by the time you read this I’ll be eight!

I love going to school. Reading is my favorite subject in the whole world. In fact, one time I read 10 chapter books in one day!  I also really like writing and learning Spanish, but I don’t like math as much. I’m working hard to learn all my math facts so that math will be more fun!

My favorite chapter books are the Magic tree House series, by Mary Pope Osborne. She lives in New York City. I even wrote her a letter. I hope she writes me back!

(I hope we can be pen pals. My dad said maybe, but not to get my hopes up.)

My brother, Max, is five years old. He will turn six this June. He was born on Father’s Day. My mom said that it he was the best present she ever could have given him.

My favorite food is pork chops. And my favorite desserts are chocolate cake and ice cream. My favorite breakfast is Danish and my favorite sports are tennis and soccer. My favorite animals are dogs and cats.

When I grow up I want to be a teacher. If I have to have a second choice, I would choose to be a singer.

I’ve been writing on Children Write the Future for the last couple of months. My dad says that I have done a really good job and so now I can write for Writer Dad. I’ve written a lot of stuff, but my favorites are the post I wrote about how to be a good friend and the one about why I love Animal Crossing (that’s my favorite game!).

I hope you will read my posts when I write them! If you have any comments I will answer them when I’m done with my homework.  If you have any questions for me, you can leave them in the comment section and my daddy said he would do another interview soon.

Thank you so much for reading!

Mia

P.S. My dad wanted me to tell you that he didn’t make me add the links! (He did them all himself)

Hi Mia .. great to meet you .. and how wonderful that your Dad considers you're good enough to write for him - now that is an accolade! I suspect you'll be doing the links too fairly soon.

Me too - I love pork chops, now chocolate cake is pretty good too .. let alone icecream - a bit cold now?!

My birthday is in January - the 13th .. I wrote a post about mine .. it's quite fun = a bit different - and my first brother is three years younger, and my second brother is three younger again ... but we are somewhat older!

We live in England on the south coast - Eastbourne .. I don't know if you can find it on the map?

Love your story and so pleased to read your own first post - excellent .. keep up the good work, especially as you're doing your homework too.

With love to you all from a cold and wet Eastbourne! Hilary
  • writerdad
Haha! That's right by my birthday!!!

It's never too cold for ice cream! Except maybe in Alaska.

I know where England is on the map, but I've never been there. It's in a lot of fairy tales.

Thanks Hilary. It was nice to meet you.
  • Hi Mia!
I hope you had a great birthday! I have fond memories of you when you were a wee infant! I remember picking up Henry and Alison from Renee's house and you always amazed me with your energy and happy spirit! You've been such a great friend and role model for Henry. I'm glad that the two of you have the opportunity to grow up together! I loved reading your post! :)
  • Mia
    Hi Leslie!

Tell Henry I said hi! He is always nice to me and I hope that next year I will get to be in his class and that we can always be in each other's class, even in middle school and high school!

    Have a great day!

  • Hi Mia!

I am very impressed with your writing skills, you are one smart girl! When I was 8 I started writing in a diary. That was before there were computers or the internet. Do you like to write by hand or do you prefer the keyboard?

I have two dogs, one is little and black and one is the biggest kind of dog there is, an Irish Wolfhound. He is very gentle and sweet. We also have llamas and cats at our house. If you look at my blog you will find animal pictures and lots of snow pictures.

I like to write too and chocolate cake is my favorite. Keep up the good work.

    Hi Loran,

I would rather write on paper because I am not as fast on the keyboard. My dad is really, really fast and he said that someday I will be too. But not yet!

Do you really have llamas? Because I love llamas! And I so so so so so so so so so want a dog and a cat.

    Have a great day!

Happy birthday. I like your Fur-Real kitty and your Fur-Real mouse.
  • Mia
For your birthday I'll probably get you that white kitty Fur Real. Then we can be twinkies!

What are you going to name it?

    Don't name it Lulu!

Hi Haley!!! Happy Birthday! I can't believe you're eight years old! Wow..I remember when you were a cute, little four-year old genious, and now you're an eight year old genious! :) Your reading and writing skills are incredible..you've come a long way baby! Hope you're staying dry in this rain. Our house leaks! We have buckets catching the drips. Gus and Hollis kind of like that it's raining in their room. Our house is almost 100 years old, so we'll give it a break. Thanks for the great post!
    Karen
  • Mia
    Hi Karen,

    Thank you for commenting!

Our house is really old too and it also leaks. Yesterday when we came home from school there was a big GIANT puddle underneath the window! And when we came home all the streets were flooded, and the sidewalk and the grass. My brother was a little bit scared, especially when the ice started to come down! I thought it was like snow (except snow probably doesn't hurt if it hits you!).

Tell Gus and Hollis that I said Hi.

    Have a great day!

  • Mia
Hi Denguy. Is that your real name?

My dad just showed me that you had a daughter who is 8 years old just like me! How come it looks like she's walking on water in that picture? That's cool.

    Have a great day.
  • Greetings, Mighty Mia!

You made my day today, lovely!
Good for you for playing soccer and tennis. I can tell you will grow to be a strong woman - we need you out there.

Thank you very much for writing for us today. You did a great job!
Let me know if you want to write something for me - I'd love to have you as a guest over at Jane Be Nimble! :)

    Warmly,
    Lori
  • Mia
Thank you Lori, you made me laugh!

What would I write about? Can I write about whatever I want? What kind of site do you have? Is it like my dad's?

Sorry I have so many questions.
  • Hi Mia,
Don't be sorry for having so many questions - it's a mark of brilliance!

You can choose to write about anything you want. I have a section of my site that I write called "Front Porch." You know, just taking about your life like you would with a neighbor or a good buddy, just like on the porch or a back yard. If you have friends over or talk with them in the park, what do you talk about? That kind of thing.

I have a site kind of like your Dad's. Yes, that's right. It's just a place to relax, talk with friends, share stories, and enjoy life.

I'll email you and your Pops to talk about this more if you're interested. I know the people who read my blog would love to meet you and would love to read about you.

I think your writing is great and I hope you do more.
    Smiles!
    Lori ;~)
  • Mia
I'm interested. My dad said you can email him any time. Thanks, Lori!

  • Hi Mia,

Your irrepressible energy is fun to read! Good job on your writing. I think you will make an awesome teacher.
  • Mia
    Hi Lori,

    Thank you!

I hope to be a good teacher. When I watch my mommy teach it makes me want to try really hard.

    Have a great day!
  • Baby Doll,

I am SO proud of you. I look at how far you've come in the last year, not just with your writing but as a remarkable human, and I lose my breath.

Thank you for being such a lively, beautiful, intelligent girl who is never afraid to speak her mind or try new things.

I love you SO SO much!
  • Mia
I love you. This is really fun! And funny because I'm sitting right next to you.

Thank you for letting me write at Writer Dad and answer all the comments.

    I love you!
  • Hi Mia,
GREAT writing! I enjoyed your post and learning a bit more about you. As for the penpal writer, don't worry if you don't hear from them. Writers are REALLY boring people once you get to know them:)

As for your career aspirations, how about a singing (or music) teacher?

I have two questions for you:
If you could be any character from any book or movie, who would it be and why?
Secondly, what are 5 things would you like to see or do before you are an adult?
  • Mia
    Hi Dave!

I really like it when my dad reads me your stuff and when I get my own computer I'm going to read it all the time. I really really really liked the picture of you holding your son over the potty at that really gross place you went to. I thought the writing was funny too. Did that happen in real life? Did you really think that it sounded like Jabba the Hutt was next door?

I would be Annie from the Magic Tree House books because she gets to do all kinds of fun things and travel through time in a magic tree house.

    1) Go to Mexico or Spain because I would like to be able to use my Spanish.
    2) Read all the Mary Pope Osborne books in the whole entire world because I'm really interested in her writing.
    3) Have a pet dog because I love dogs.
    4) Teach around the world just like my mom did.
    5) Become a famous artist because I love art.
  • Read ALL my stuff? Uh-oh, I guess I better stick to the G-rated words when that day comes :)

    That's a great list.
I think my list at your age was:
    1) drink as much soda as I can possibly consume because I wasn't allowed to drink soda as a kid (check).
    2) Draw or write X-Men comics (not gonna happen)
    3) travel the world (I don't like flying, so probably not unless someone invents long distance jetpacks - which I wouldn't mind using at all)
    4) have my own TV show (maybe if they start making TV shows for blind people)
    5) Have a friend that wasn't invisible. (I've made a couple)
  • Mia
That's a great list too! It made me laugh. My favorite was #1.

The first time I had soda was at CostCo. My dad had a Sprite and I thought it was water. I did NOT like how it felt on my tongue. I thought my tongue was burning! Then last year I had a soda float for science in first grade and I loved it! Now I like soda.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Baby Girl,
My heart bursts with pride when I hear your chirpy voice and when you put your thoughts down on paper I feel lucky to be a part of what happens in your brain. You are a magnificent girl and I love that you want to spend all of your recesses with your little notebook jotting down ideas, but remember playtime is important too. You have a vivid imagination and your ability to write in English and Spanish makes me want to work harder. You inspire me honey. Thank you for being the best daughter a mother could ever have and thank you Sean for starting a running record of our children's voice that we will look back on and know that we never squandered a minute.

    Hi Mommy!

Chuckle chuckle, giggle giggle! I'm right next to you right now!!! This is funny.

    I love you too, Mommy!

I WANNA DRAW DURING RECESS... I WANNA DRAW DURING RECESS...

    Love you Mama!

    Me
  • You're welcome, Sweetheart. Thank YOU for giving me such awesome children. The best thing about this site is exactly that - a running record. Thank you for always being so encouraging of what has kinda sorta become our third baby. :)

    Hello Mia,

What a delight to read your post and you have my admiration about the way you write with clarity and passion.

I would love to be your pen pal if you also like the idea of corresponding with someone from a different culture. I come from Taiwan but I'm living in Hereford, UK with my fiance who is a kiwi. My cultural background means that I speak Mandarin, Taiwanese, and English. My fiance has a son of your age so I thought it would be so cool to be your pen pal. It will help me to learn more about 8-year-old children like and dislike. Maybe later on you two can be pen pals as well! :)

In general, there are two age groups of people I enjoy befriends with: children and elderly people. My youngest friend is my goddaughter whose English name is Natalie and she is 4 years old. My oldest friend is Mr. Harrison who is 94 years old and he loves writing as well. Mr. Harrison has self-published his autobiography and is still writing about his life!

If you want to know what I look like, you can ask your dad to show you my twitter page.

Have a lovely day (or evening)!

    Mei x

PS: I love your joke about tiramasu! ;) My stepson-to-be also likes to play with words like you do.

    Hi Mei,

    What runs, but doesn't walk?

    Did you get it yet?

    That's right! It's water!!!

I would love to be pen pals. You sound very interesting. My mommy taught in Asia too! She's been teaching for 22 years (including the ones at my school). My mom also speaks a little bit of Mandarin from when she taught in China.

Do you know the song about the two tigers running fast? My mom knows that song.

My dad showed me your Twitter page. You look very pretty! Where are you in that picture?

You have a great day too.
  • Mei
    Hi Mia,

I was thrilled to read your reply! Now I can tell the whole world that I have a sweet and adorable pen pal from the other side of the world.

I thought I would share with you that I passed my PhD viva (oral examination) so I have been awarded a PhD with some modifications to do.

I enjoyed your joke! :) I'll write you more & answer your questions after I go back to Hereford (I'm in Southampton). I'm feeling very happy but exhausted from the preparation and the whole process.

Thank you for wearing lots of red and thinking good thoughts for my viva as I heard from your mom!

    love,

    Mei x

PS: How about this: What is dark but made of light? ;)
  • Mia
    Hi Mei,

Congratulations on getting your PhD! I bet you're really excited!

I know the answer to your riddle...

    It's a shadow!!!

    Am I right?

    How about this one...

There are two spies who ask for a drink from a bad guy. The bad guy pours them each a drink over ice and puts the same amount of poison in each drink. One of the spies drinks it really fast and stays alive. But the other spy who drinks it really slow dies.

Why did the one spy die?

  • Hi Mia,
You are a very talented writer and I really enjoyed reading your post. My oldest daughter loves the Magic Tree House books too. She is a little younger than you and we read them together. Last night we just finished reading the one where Jack and Annie visit the first Thanksgiving. I look forward to reading more from you!

I have read about twenty of the Magic Treehouse books, including that one! I really liked when Jack and Annie tried to catch the eels and the clams.

My favorite Magic Treehouse book is "Earthquake in the Early Morning." It was the first one I read and got me interested in the series. Maybe your daughter would like that too. The librarian at the Long Beach Library go me interested in the Magic Treehouse books. Her name is Mrs. Chenda and she is really nice.
  • Hi honey-bunny! you did a great job! I know how much you like to read. When I was your age I would get my mother to take me to the library and I would check out ten books a week. That is as many as the library would allow. I'm glad that you have the wonderful opportunity to develop your writing skills. Many people are not that lucky. I did not know that pork chops were your favorite....your dad does not seem to like "the other white meat", so I assumed you did not either. I will make you some super-yummy chops that I do with an orange and wine sauce (don't worry, the alcohol cooks off, dad!) sometime soon. See you tomorrow. xoxo grammy
  • Hi Grammy!

You don't have to bring anything!

I wish the library would let me check out more books. I can check out twelve, but that is all, and I always read them before it's time to go back.

    See you tomorrow, Grammy!

    Love you!

(WD Note to Grammy: I did NOT tell her to write the thing about you not having to bring anything!) :)
  • Hi, Mia!

Chocolate cake and ice cream are my favorites, too! But I can't eat too much because then I get sick. That's ok, though, I don't mind saving cake for super special occasions!!

We will definitely read your posts when you write.

It was my birthday last week and I got to have tiramasu and cheesecake. The tiramasu was the best. Here's a joke:

What did the piece of tiramasu say?

    "You're a tearing my suit!"

Get it? Tear, a My Suit.

    I made that up myself!

    Thank you, Hayden.
  • Ha ha ha, Mia, you made me think of another way to tell that joke.

What did Peter tell Jill when he saw her Halloween costume?

    You're, uhh, tearing my suit!
  • Mia
Ha ha ha, that joke's really funny!

I'm going to go tell my mom! Thanks Ari!!!

What I think is really wonderful is the enjoyment you find in reading chapter books. I have an eight year old son and would love for him learn to enjoy reading as much as you clearly do.

Do you have any tips to help me encourage him to read more?

    Hi Dave,

My friend Jaden doesn't really like reading either and I got her into reading the Magic Treehouse series and she loves them!

I've heard Captain Underpants is good too.
  • Hi Dave,

Has he tried the Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osbourne? There is lots of adventure and history and myths. They have the same characters from book to book.

Maybe if he starts reading a series, he'll want to keep going?

Thanks for talking to me Dave, my dad says you're a really nice man!
  • Mia, thanks for putting me on to Mary Pope Osbourne, I'll be sure to have a look at her work.

The idea about series is a great one, in fact, I have one in mind. Captain Underpants!! :D

Mia, it was a pleasure to meet you, I really enjoyed reading your words today.

Thank you for passing along the compliment from your dad. You know, I think he's pretty cool and very funny! :)

    Dave
  • Dude, Captain Underpants is an AWESOME choice. Kids love those books.
  • Danny Cooper
Fantastic post Mia! A really enjoyable read. Good work on all the links too, you're a SEO star in the making :)
  • Thank you, Danny!

My dad did all the links, but he showed me what he was doing.

    Thanks for stopping by!
