My Friend, Chef Roberto

IMG_1145

The two pictures are of my good friend Roberto teaching my children to make guacamole. Roberto and I have been friends for a few years now and he is without a doubt one of my favorite people in the world. Last week something wonderful happened for him and I’m thrilled to congratulate him in the best way I know how.

Roberto has a pretty cool job.

He loves to cook and is fortunate and hard working enough to have spent his last few years as a celebrity chef. This doesn’t mean Roberto is a chef who is also a celebrity. It means he is a chef who has worked mostly for celebrity clients. He has worked with his most recent client for a while now and two weeks ago she asked if he would like to make an appearance on her daily talk show.IMG_1143

Congratulations Roberto, I couldn’t be happier for you. Not just for the opportunity, but for the way you carried yourself in front of a national audience. You showed no fear and were every bit the man I know with all your warmth, confidence and humor all in place. I can’t imagine holding it together half as well as you did, but I felt giddy watching you and imagining your excitement.

Please enjoy my friend Roberto Martin as he made his first appearance on Ellen:

  3. Hi sean, finally I get to meet Roberto! I have heard so many stories of him as we sit around the table on “grammy night” and I can say he seems every bit of a sweetheart as you have made him out to be. Good luck to him on his new gig and good luck to you in your contest (come on, readers, vote for my baby boy….he really does fart sunshine!) Love ya, mom

Hayden: Roberto is the awesomest for sure.

Mom: I shart sunshine too! Thanks for the plug, ma. It would totally be the best gig ever, wouldn’t it? I just found out about on Friday night. Voting runs until the last day of the month and then it moves to phase II. I’m gonna try and grab it!

Michelle: Natural is definitely the right word. I was struck by how authentic he was standing up there on the stage. He seemed so calm, collected and totally himself. I imagine I would’ve lost it for sure!

Berto: We have had so many front porch talks about the backyards of our lives. We were gifted to spend so many moments teaching your son and sharing anectdotes about your aspirations and family life. I am excited for the public, humble, and personable way the world received your presence. I adore you and I have been a number 1 fan since day one when we interviewed each other’s families for the most important job…inspirng intelligent people on a daily basis and making sure reciprocity of learning took place before we parted ways with peace. A well deserved accolade. ” You rock, because you are a ROCK” no hyperbole. Simepre, brother bear.

Thanks for sharing Roberto with us, Sean. That’s one of the best bits about blogging, getting to highlight the folk who make us happy and who deserve a bit of spotlight. I’m glad he had his TV moment. I can’t wait to see the video of you getting yours some day!

  15. I loved the clip; it’s fun to watch. I’m going to get Chef Roberto’s recipes from Ellen’s website for sure. I’m not vegan or even vegetarian but I am introducing my family to more of those types of meals. We’re all enjoying them and it’s so much healthier than meat every day, plus all of the planetary benefits. (We ARE vegetarians on Mondays, though, since we made the meat free Mondays promise on http://www.meatlessmonday.com.)

Thanks for sharing the clip; now I’ll go cast my vote for you for the contest!

  21. Hello Writer Dad-
I hope you landed the gig!! I am hoping you can help me get in contact with Chef Roberto. I am Marketing Manager at Chef Revival and I have many marketing opportunities for Chef Roberto just starting with Modeling for Chef Revival's world wide catalog! I won't toot the horn of Chef Revival on here right now as I”m pretty darn positive Chef Roberto knows who we are. (he was wearing a chef revival jacket on one of his episodes on ellen!) Anways, I have tried contacting the Ellen show but the people with whom I speak with have no way of connecting me with him or don't know who he is associated with to transfer me to. Below if my contact information- if you could please let me know how I get in contact with Chef Roberto for dual advertising for both him and Chef Revival, that would be wonderful!!! or feel free to pass my information on

Could you ask your friend Roberto…where I can buy the black bean spaghetti? Mother's market in our area (Santa Ana, Orange, CA) does not carry it. We are interested.
    Thanks so much.
    I will vote for you!

A dozen years back, Cindy and I started the ritual of ringing in New Years alone, making our resolutions over a pair of champagne flutes while dreaming out loud about the 12 months to come. This time we broke an old tradition in favor of a new one. The four of us spent the final day of last year and the first of this one with our good friends, the Martins. [...]
