Abumchuk the buffalo, well his bum was all red,
So he rubbed on some butter and then went to bed.
When he woke in the morning, well to his surprise,
He’d grown a new forehead and six sets of sad eyes.
Abumchuk the buffalo could do nothing but weep.
He shuddered and shivered and then fell to sleep.
When he woke the next morning, new sun in the sky.
Well Abumchuk discovered, Abumchuk could fly.
It was odd when the buffalo was turning all weird,
But then the notion of weird, well it disappeared.
A buffalo that flies with six sets of sad eyes
And a red bum of butter that birthed the surprise,
Well that’s probably as weird as you think it could be.
But you’re only saying so because you haven’t met me.

Wow, I haven’t laughed out loud while reading a poem since Shel Silverstein! That last line is classic.

Cool, Hayden! A modern day Shel Silverstein is kinda the vibe we’re going for.

You know mine roll on the floor. The word “abumchuck” was made up well before the rhyme.

I love him. I love him so much I want to marry him. I love the word bum. Dave, Abumkchuk is so perfectly crafted. You know I am a big fan of your imagination on paper. Sean, well I live with you and gosh, darn I am a big fan of everything you do. How fortunate are we to be happy?

Very cute but I shan’t be reading it to Simon since ever since that Potty Training Power video he likes to LOUDLY announce anywhere and everywhere “Hey mom, my butt feews weiw-uhd, I think something’s coming out! Could it be POOP?!?”
So, boycotting anything with butt and weird on the same page.

LOL! Sounds like someone in my family that looks almost exactly like me, except tiny.

As I read this, my first thought was, “fun rhyming, but this story line is so weird” — because I grew up with what seemed more “normal” childhood rhymes , but then I went back and read some. I had to shake my head and laugh at my memory’s filter. Many of those rhymes are quite odd: Sing a song of sixpence, Old woman who lived in a shoe, and Tom, Tom, the piper’s son. And then there’s this jolly one:
Goosie Gander
Goosie, goosie, gander,
Wither shall I wander ?
Upstairs and downstairs,
And in my lady’s chamber.
There I met an old man
Who wouldn’t say his prayers;
I took him by the left leg,
And threw him down the stairs.
(Sheesh!)
So, David, let loose Abumchuk the Buffalo! May he graze and raise the bar above the cow who jumped over the moon.

Nursery rhymes are CRAZY! Once I got over the idea that my rhymes had to make sense, they grew a LOT more playful in addition to being just generally more fun to write.
