Country Bear, City Pup

July 6, 2009

Before starting Writer Dad, my primary purpose for the pen was writing children’s stories for the house full of children that Cindy and I managed Monday through Friday. I went on a three month children’s story binge, popping out a portfolio of rhyming ditties that have sat largely untouched for the last year and a half.

One of these tales was given breath earlier this year by the wonderful work of Lucy Huang, a remarkable freelance illustrator who is particularly interested in children’s books. Lucy wanted to draw something for children and asked if I would care to collaborate. I said sure and sent over one of my stories, “Country Bear, City Pup.”

Lucy took those thousand words and gave them the color that I never could have. The words might have inspired the drawings, but the look and feel of the design were all Lucy . It is a wonderful thing as a writer to see a world of your creation move from pallid black and whites to the beautiful hues that Lucy bestowed.

Thank you Lucy for your wonderful work.

Country Bear and City Pup will be available as a free PDF on Thursday, compliments of Writer Dad and Lulu Design. Download it for free, print it out, and read it to your wee one.

Until then, you can enjoy this little teaser for Country Bear, City Pup – also cooked up as a courtesy by Lulu’s Design.

See you Thursday!

  • I'm impressed! What an awesome collaboration between two talents.
  • Tracy: Apparently the process is easy enough to be not too big a deal, but complicated enough to be too big a deal for me. Looks like a maybe later. : > )

Janice: Step by step, or as Malcolm Gladwell would say, hour by hour.

Laurie: Thanks, Laurie. I've no intention of stopping!

Super! As a former kinder teacher, I know this is incredible stuff you are writing here for our kiddos. Keep it up.
  • Love this one Sean! Well, you knew that already :)

Unfortunately Tracy - even if it is easy to create an iphone app - but the process is more complex ( you need to be approved by Apple and so on ...) The developers will charge quite a bit and you will need to sell at least a few hundred books before you can recoup costs. We have it in the works for Memetales (my start up) - but we are building sufficient content so that marketing the books, making iphone apps etc all become worth it. And I am so excited that Sean's books will be on there :)
  • I'm afraid I can't get the screen to work, but I'll catch the PDF on Thursday. Well done, Sean - one step closer! And thanks, Lucy for choosing a good place to share your talent.
  • Sean, I have not one clue! I imagine you'd have to hire a developer to make your book into an app. I don't think it would be terribly complex, so probably not that expensive. The ones we like are just the book, with the words and either the option to have it read out loud or no sound and we read it ourselves.

This would probably be best for shorter books with fewer words per page and I'm afraid you probably wouldn't be able to charge more than $1.99. On the other hand, sooooo many parents I know have iPhones or iTouches and if you could get the right publicity, it could be a hit!
  • Lucy: The pleasure was all mine. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with me.

    Trina: I admit, it's pretty adorable. : > )

JD: There's nothing like it at all. You can see all the pictures on Thursday. It was a fun little project.

Tracy: No, I've never thought of it at all! What's involved? Sounds awesome.
  • Awww, I watched that with the almost 2 y/0 on my lap and he was enchanted!

Have you guys thought about doing apps for the iPhone? I've downloaded several kids books to have on hand when I have to wait someplace with the kids.
  • That was too cool. There really is something special about stepping into a world of imagination.

How cute, both in words and pics - what a great team. Looking forward to Thursday and sharing with families I know with wee ones. Heck, I suspect my not so wee ones will appreciate the offering.
  • This is a wonderful story by Writer Dad. It inspired me, and reminded me what friendship is really about.

It was his words that wove this story, and brought to life the characters in my mind. It will surely bring to life the story in many a child's heart.

Thanks for the chance to work with you, Sean.

Hope that everyone here likes the story.
