Today I Am Me!

Today is my birthday and you know what is weird.

There’s something so odd (though it’s just as I feared).

I’m one whole year older though muchly the same.

I have on an old outfit and I’m called the same name.

When I woke up this morning, much to my surprise,

I had the same ears, nose, mouth and two eyes.

That by itself would have been a bit strange,

But I swear I could not see even one single change.

The scratch is still there from my scuffle with Saul

And I still line right up with that notch on the wall.

I counted my fingers and sure enough, like my toes.

All of the digits are lined up in rows.

I know it seems silly, but I truly thought

I’d wake up a bit different, but I guess I did not.

When I complained to my father that nothing had changed,

He just started smiling, “Son, you must be deranged!

Why would you want to change all that is awesome?

Blooms shouldn’t be in a hurry to blossom.

Changing takes time, a lot more than you know.

You can see something grown, but cannot watch it grow.

Time is your friend, but he will not be rushed,

Rooted or muted or silenced or crushed

One day you’ll stare in the mirror and wonder

How time tore through your life as though lightning and thunder.

When that day comes, you’ll know just what to do -

Squeeze your eyes tight and remember this you.”

Then he pointed at me and he gave me a lift,

With this perfectly unparalleled incomparable gift.

He taught me a trick – how to travel through ages,

Like I picked up a book and then flipped back the pages.

You can never go forward, but you can always reverse.

“Come over here,” he waved, “and we can rehearse.“

Then we remembered, one or two years from before.

Then after those memories we remembered some more.

My daddy showed me that tomorrow’s not here,

But today is right now and will soon disappear.

When I look in the mirror, I don’t mind what I see

Because today is today and today I am me.

It's not really my birthday, though I was going to run that rhyme back in January when it was. I don't remember why I didn't, though I'm sure it was for something really important like a rant about Kanye or the PTA or something. :)

Love those lines. Terrific poem, Sean. Have a Happy Birthday!

  8. writerdad says:

Thanks, Tasha! I appreciate it the compliment. Not really my birthday, though I think I'll pretend it is. I do like the thought. :)

    Hi Sean,

Surely a gem that will someday be a classic!

  10. writerdad says:

    Hi Janice,

Totally not my birthday, but now thanks to all the well wishing, I totally feel like it is. And yeah, with all that's happening and a supportive family around me, I do feel as though my birthday wishes from a couple of months ago are all turning true. :)

  11. writerdad says:

    Hi Susan,

I JUST reread it and those lines jumped out at me as well. Funny.

It's my unbirthday, but I'm taking your happy along with me anyway. :)

    Thanks Susan!

    I can't freaking wait.

Syllable Soup probably has the least money potential, and yet I'd probably rather see it successful more than anything on my plate. :)

  13. HilaryMB says:

Oh ..you could have written it for me too – I'm a Jan babe .. well was .. somewhat older and grumpier now?! Have a great party anyways .. bye .. H

  14. writerdad says:

I've told my wife to go ahead and bring home a bunch of balloons and a cake. I mean, why not?

    :)

  15. HilaryMB says:

Any extra please send over .. I'll get it for breakfast!! That's what my younger brother did years ago … Mum cut some cake for him (swiss roll – old days!) .. he ate the cake and left the slice .. Mum was shattered to say the least .. my brother's comment was (aged 5 or 6) .. we wrap it up and send it to Oxfam??!! Enjoy the balloons .. hate those – always have .. don't like surprise bangs! but the cake I'll have …..??!!

  16. margaret/sean's mom says:

ha ha, fooled them all, it's not really your day
you were just being silly and wanted to play.
April fools' it's not either, that's a few weeks away
you just had plenty you wanted to say.

Your poem's real cute, fun for reading and rhyming
but as for your birthday, its wrong for the timing

We change and we grow with each minute that passes
like stars in the sky and constellations and gasses.
It's all so we can get older and wiser
and all our experiences can make us be nicer.

I know that this poem is really a stretch
so I'll see you tonight , before you must retch.

    love you, mom
